Inside Karl Lagerfelds Many Luxurious Homes

The first of the designer’s apartments to appear in Vogue was his Art Deco set piece in Paris. “It’s more an atmosphere than anything—it is poesie, a dream,” said the designer, who was then designing for Chloé, where he was filtering the Jazz Age through a 1970s lens. The Lisboa Palace complex also is to include a Versace-themed hotel designed by the Italian fashion label and announced by SJM in September. The announcement comes after Lagerfeld startled visitors to Chanel's fashion show in Paris this week by holding the event in a full-scale recreation of a supermarket with Chanel-branded groceries. Lagerfeld bought the home in 1988, just five years after he began his decades-long tenure at Chanel, and subsequently renovated it. Built in 1902, the Belle Epoque style of the property makes for particularly impressive environs, with gorgeous wall panelling, columns, and crown moulding throughout the estate.

With six bedrooms, four bathrooms, two dressing rooms, and a billiards room, there’s certainly plenty of space to go around. Outside, a 2,500 square foot terrace offers a place to soak up the sun and the views of the Mediterranean Sea. A stay at the property includes a private lounge tent at the Monte-Carlo Beach Hotel’s private beach, along with access to their pool and restaurants, and an electric car so that the hotel’s many amenities can be easily reached. Lagerfeld, whose work crossed over into film and photography, continued to maintain a busy schedule.

Karl’s love of Art Deco had led him to amass a well-edited collection of furniture, lamps decorative arts and ceramics which he had been collecting since the 1960s. Of all the peeks into Lagerfeld’s life proffered through the interiors features published in Vogue, perhaps the most telling is the photograph of the designer’s brushed-steel bed in his futuristic apartment. In stark contrast to the metal, it’s dressed in fresh white cotton and lace-trimmed linens, a promise, it seems, of a soft landing for Lagerfeld upon return from his time travels and heady flights of imagination.

This new direction was actually initiated the year before Lagerfeld took the helm, 1982, when a design team led by Hervé Léger, a Lagerfeld protegé, operated at the house. Lagerfeld was known to misrepresent his birth year, claiming to be younger than his actual age, and to misrepresent his parents' background. For example, he claimed that he was born in 1938 to "Elisabeth of Germany" and Otto Ludwig Lagerfeldt . These claims have been conclusively proven to be false, as his father was from Hamburg and spent his entire life in Germany, with no Swedish connection. There is also no evidence that his mother Elisabeth Bahlmann, the daughter of a middle-class local politician, called herself "Elisabeth of Germany".

The reworking of the revered suit - not to mention the whole collection, which included some pretty suggestive evening gowns - was the work of three former young assistants to Karl Lagerfeld, the Paris-based internationally renowned designer. The chief contributor was 25-year-old Herve Leger...umors persist that was the eminence grise behind it. That means sleeves that curve outward like melons; the melon shape is repeated in many skirts. Cavalier jackets have peplums that jut out sharply from tightly belted waistlines. The global project, which was curated by Karl Lagerfeld Style Adviser Carine Roitfeld, features designs from Cara Delevingne, Kate Moss, Tommy Hilfiger, Diane Kruger, Takashi Murakami, Amber Valletta, and British street artist, Endless, amongst others. He had an 18-year relationship with the French aristocrat, model, and socialite Jacques de Bascher (1951–1989), though Lagerfeld said that the liaison never became sexual.

In 1954, Lagerfeld submitted a dress design to the International Wool Secretariat's design competition that presaged the chemise dresses that would be introduced by Givenchy and Balenciaga in 1957. His older sister, Martha Christiane "Christel", was born in 1931. Lagerfeld had an older half-sister, Theodora Dorothea "Thea", from his father's first marriage.

While Lagerfeld's Fall 2018 collection for Fendi featured an undeniable nod to the '40s, we appreciated the subtle hint of athleisure sprinkled throughout, such as these cult-favorite Fendi sweatshirts. Lagerfeld's Egyptian-inspired Metiers D'Art collection, showcased late last year (and later worn by the iconic Janelle Monáe), was absolutely breathtaking. Lagerfeld later caused another controversy, on 31 July 2012, when he criticised Pippa Middleton, the sister of Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, for her looks. Hemlines barely cleared the knee, instead of descending two inches below as the late Gabrielle Chanel preferred and skirts were considerably skimpier. The skirt has been narrowed and the hem hiked up to an above-the-knee level. It was Lagerfeld who originally introduced the current silhouette of broad shoulders, nipped waist, curvy hip and short skirt.

De Bascher died of AIDS in 1989 while Lagerfeld stayed on a cot at his bedside in his hospital room during the final stages of his illness. The final Chanel collection completed before his death had an Alpine theme of après-ski clothing. As Lagerfeld requested not to have any type of funeral, the show only included a moment of silence in his honor and chairs emblazoned with his image next to Coco Chanel with the saying "the beat goes on". Although Lagerfeld shunned any emotional reactions around the idea of his death, some models could be seen crying on the runway, as well as audience members.

In addition to his own label, fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld was a major creative force behind such well-known brands as Tommy Hilfiger, Chanel and Fendi. In December 2006, Lagerfeld announced the launch of a new collection for men and women dubbed K Karl Lagerfeld, which included fitted T-shirts and a wide range of jeans. In September 2010, the Couture Council of The Museum at the Fashion Institute of Technology presented Lagerfeld with an award created for him, The Couture Council Fashion Visionary Award, at a benefit luncheon at Avery Fisher Hall, in New York City. In November 2010, Lagerfeld and Swedish crystal manufacturer Orrefors announced a collaboration to design a crystal art collection. The first collection was launched in spring 2011, called Orrefors by Karl Lagerfeld.

Career Beginnings

A designer's designer, he is watched carefully for his innovations, which are as technical as finding ways to avoid linings, eliminating seams whenever possible and finishing hems with overcast stitches instead of turned‐under hems. Lagerfeld was recognized for his signature white hair, black sunglasses, fingerless gloves, and high, starched detachable collars. As a child, he showed great interest in visual arts, and former schoolmates recalled that he was always making sketches "no matter what we were doing in class".
